Sliding gate motor signs to watch for

Sliding gate motor signs to watch for

A sliding gate that is on its way out almost always tells you first. The trouble is the signs creep in slowly enough that you stop noticing them, until the morning it refuses to move and you are stuck on the wrong side of the fence. Here is what we listen and look for on a service call, and what each sign usually means.

1. It is getting louder, week by week

A healthy slider runs with a steady, low hum. When that turns into a grind, a rattle, or a high-pitched whine, something mechanical is wearing. The usual suspects are the track wheels, the bearings in the motor gearbox, or a rack that has worked loose and is no longer meshing cleanly with the pinion.

Caught early, this is a cheap fix, a wheel or a bearing. Left alone, the extra load works back into the motor and you end up replacing the whole drive unit instead of a ten dollar part.

"Noise that builds week by week takes the motor with it if you ignore it. It is the cheapest warning you will ever get."

2. It drops cycles or stalls halfway

If the gate sometimes stops partway and reverses, or needs a second press to finish, the motor is pulling more current than it should. That points to a tired capacitor, a binding track, or limit positions that have drifted out of calibration. A quick diagnostic with a clamp meter tells us which.

3. The remote works, but the gate does not

When the remote light blinks but nothing moves, the fault is usually downstream of the controller: a limit switch, the receiver, or wiring between the controller and motor. It is rarely the remote itself, so before you buy a new one, it is worth a proper look.

When to call

Any of these on their own is worth a booked service rather than an emergency callout. They are warnings, not failures. Book it while the gate still moves and you will almost always pay less, wait less, and keep the motor you have. Leave it until it stops, and the bill grows with the queue.
